Tuesday August20, 2019 – A Trip to Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.
That day at Joffre Lakes Provincial Park was one of the best during my Canadian road trip. Even before leaving for Canada, I could not wait to reach these 3 pastel blue lakes and take the famous picture walking on the trunk.
If you want to read my entire itinerary in Western Canada, you can find it here.
Visiting this park in the middle of August turned out to be perfect, the temperatures were excellent to make the most of the day. Maybe there were too many clouds when I visited it but it was fine anyway.
We arrived the night before at the small motel in nearby Pemberton, “The Hitching Post Motel“, and the following morning we got up calmly, had breakfast at Mt Currie Coffee and went for an essential food shopping at “Stay Wild Natural Health Food Store and Juice Bar”, an organic mini market in town.
MAP
At 11.00 am we were traveling to reach the starting point of the trip.
Along the way we saw a small bear that came out of the trees overlooking the road, this made my day even more beautiful!
After 30 min drive, we were at the parking lot. I organized the backpack with:
Food (croutons, cheese, fruits, biscuits)
Water
Tissues
Insects Spray
Sunscreen
Pic-Nic blanket
Swearshirt
Swinsuit
My outfit:
Undershirt
Long comfortable pants
Sweater
Long socks
Boots (timberland)
At the parking lot there is a map with the entire itinerary to reach the 3 lakes, with differences in altitude and timing, even if the time indicated is longer than the real one.
TRAIL FEATURES:
Length: single path, 11 km long
Duration: 4 h
Difficulty: intermediate
Difference in altitude: 400 m
Route: diffucult climbs, between stones, steps and roots. You walk on paths surrounded by vegetation and along stretches completely exposed to the sun.
REACHING THE LOWER JOFFRE LAKE (first lake):
Time: 5 min
Route: easy, without slope, through the trees.
View: you can admire it from a single small soil pitch, equipped with a wooden bench.
Suggestions: the lake has a water-green colour , the mountains behind reflect perfectly on the whole lake. I stopped at the first lake around 12pm and on the way back, at around 4pm, the light in the afternoon gave to the lake a more magical atmosphere.
Stay: 10 min
REACHING THE MIDDLE JOFFRE LAKE (second lake) FROM THE FIRST LAKE:
Time: 1 h
Route: first section (20 min) on flat ground among the trees, then all uphill between rocks and steps.
View: the path runs along the lake for about 200m, so you can see it from various points / spaces. Here there is also a famous trunk of a tree fallen in the water from which you can take a lot of pics.
Suggestions: this lake is spectacular, its intense blue color makes it incomparable. A turquoise mirror surrounded by green trees.
Permanenza: 30/40 min (to admire it and take some photos; I had to wait about 10 min to take the photo on the trunk because of the queue caused by the Chinese people).
REACH THE UPPER JOFFRE LAKE (third lake) FROM THE SECOND LAKE:
Time: 30 min
Route: uphill, always between rocks and trees; the last piece winds between wooden walkways and flat path on soil.
View: on the third lake you have a much wider view, you can go up and walk on the rocks that go down to the lake; we chose a flat one to stop for our picnic. In front of the lake you can admire the large glacier where you can camp with your tent, obviously in specific places and buying “the pass” at the beginning of the path. We stopped to observe this magnificent lake from above, but there is also the possibility to continue for another 20 minutes to arrive at the foot of the ice giant.
Suggestions: also this lake has an intense blue colour and it is very fascinating to see the glacier behind the lake.
Stay: 30 min lunch + 15 min for some photos.
MY SUMMARY:
11.15 – departure from the nearest village, Pemberton, with shopping at the market already made (you must have food with you because there is nothing there).
11.45 – arrival at the beginning of the trail,
12.00 – FIRST LAKE
13.00 – SECOND LAKE
14.00 – THIRD LAKE
16.00 – return to the parking lot.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING THE TRAIL:
This trail, with the goal of reaching the 3 lakes, has an intermediate difficulty; even if you are not particularly trained you can easily do it. The most difficult part is the journey to reach the second lake, because it is very steep. The important thing is to have food and water with you. You will find public toilets at the beginning of the trail (at the parking lot), and just before reaching the third lake (chemical toilets). I suggest taking sunscreen and an insect spray.
The day I spent at Joffre Lakes provincial Park was one of my favourites, the lakes are incredibly exciting , their colours really left me speechless! And… Having had the chance to see the little bear who has come out on the street, was the cherry on top… beautiful!
What can I say … I really hope I conveyed you the desire to go and spend a day in these blue lakes ♥
