Twins Of Journey | A trip to the Messner Mountain Museum

The MMM Corones closes the route of the Messner Mountain Museum circuit, consisting of six museums. In fact, it has been Reinhold Messner who decided to dedicate these museums to the mountains and their culture. This architecture, designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid, is located in one of the most spectacular peaks of Sudtirol, Plan de Corones. From there, you have a 360° view of the most beautiful mountains in the world: the Dolomites to the east, the Ortlesa to the west, the peaks of Zillertal to the north and finally the Marmolada to the south. The archistar has designed a particular structure which is largely buried in order to interfere as little as possible with the nature of the place. The museum tells the story of the modern mountaineering, the improvements achieved in the equipment, the triumphs and, unfortunately, also the tragedies.

For those who love the mountain I would say that such a breathtaking place is hard to be found… do you agree?

I visited this museum during a relaxing weekend at the mountains. The hotel in which I was staying was in Valdaora, a small village near Brunico, so I took the cable car from there. As soon as I got off the cable car of the Plan de Corones ski area, I looked for the museum, but I couldn’t find it. It blends so well with the surrounding landscape that I hadn’t even noticed it! I particularly liked the entrance window because the glass reflected the mountains which seemed endless and it reflected the whole mountain range behind me. The interior of the building is spread over several floors, the terraces mark the areas dedicated to the museum, which seems like slowly coming down from a top.

In my opinion, the best things are the 3 small areas where you can observe the beauty of the nature. I reached these areas going down stairs and ramps until I arrived in some small furnished spaces with one or two chairs and a large square window that framed the view… it looked like a painting. Sitting there, in fact, I felt in a place of reflection, I could have spent hours and hours in silence only with the company of the peaks. One of these 3 areas give also access to a terrace and from the outside I had the impression that these views were big binoculars. I really enjoyed this place and I hope I have inspired you the desire to go and visit it!

HOW AND WHEN TO GO?

The museum is quite small and can be visited easily in an hour. It is open from 10 am to 4 pm from the first Saturday of June until the second Sunday of October and from the end of November until mid-April. It remains open every day during the same opening times of the cable cars. Taking a cable car is the quickest and most convenient way to get to the museum; otherwise, the most fearless ones can reach it by foot. There are 4 starting areas to get to the top: from Valdaora, from Passo Furcia, from San Vigilio di Marebbe and from Riscone. The ticket costs € 10 full price and € 4 reduced.

The Plan de Corones ski area is one of the most important and well-known peaks from where many ski slopes start, enriched not only with this beautiful museum but also with various huts where you can warm up and taste typical South Tyrolean dishes.

I visited this museum on the 1^stof April, it was really worth it to see it covered in snow. Now, at the first opportunity, I would like to go back there during summer to admire the green and lush landscape. Take some time to go and see it and then let me know what you think!
